A fast-moving brush fire, dubbed the Laguna Fire, broke out Thursday morning, January 23, 2025, in the hills west of the CSU Channel Islands campus near Camarillo.
Firefighters responded to the blaze around 8:35 a.m. near Hueneme and Laguna roads. The fire rapidly spread to approximately 3 acres before reaching 50 acres by 10:30 a.m. Helicopters assisted ground crews in battling the flames as the fire burned down to Potrero Road, threatening structures on campus.
By 11:20 a.m., fire officials reported that forward progress had been stopped. Ventura County Fire Department crews remained on the scene to address any flare-ups and secure the area.
As conditions improved, authorities downgraded evacuation orders to evacuation warnings for CSU Channel Islands and the University Glen neighborhood by 11:50 a.m. The campus was reopened. However, classes were canceled for the day and set to resume Friday.
A temporary evacuation point was established at the Camarillo Community Center at 1605 E. Burnley Street. Multiple buses assisted students, staff, and residents in evacuating the area.
Road closures remained in effect for Potrero Road and the Oxnard Street entrance to the campus as of noon. Residents are advised to monitor vcemergency.com for updates on evacuations and road closures.
The fire occurred amid ongoing red flag warnings due to persistent Santa Ana winds across Southern California.
