A 49-year-old pedestrian, identified as Lalita Y., of Bakersfield, was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash on Belle Terrace in Kern County on Saturday night, March 14, 2026.
According to the Bakersfield Police Department, officers responded to the 200 block of Belle Terrace around 9:50 p.m. after receiving reports of the incident.
Upon arrival, they found the victim with severe injuries, and she was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that the pedestrian was on the south shoulder of the road when a car driving eastbound veered off the road and struck her. The driver fled the scene following the crash, but witnesses provided helpful details.
Less than an hour later, officers arrested 42-year-old Pedro C. in connection with the hit-and-run. He was charged with vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death.
Investigators believe speed and impairment were contributing factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
