A horse was euthanized and its rider sustained major injuries after they were struck by a vehicle in Wilton, Sacramento County, on Friday evening, April 4, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 7:50 p.m. in the 9600 block of Cosumnes Road near Wilton Road.
Both the rider and the horse suffered serious injuries. Responding officers said the horse was humanely euthanized at the scene due to the severity of its injuries. The rider was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of major injuries.
Authorities briefly shut down the roadway to manage the scene. CHP confirmed that alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
