One person was killed, while another was injured following a suspected DUI collision in east Oakland on Sunday night, May 5, 2024.
According to the Oakland Police Department, the fatal crash happened at around 10:50 p.m. near the intersection of 73rd Avenue and Orral Street.
Police said that the victim, who was only identified as a man, was riding a scooter going south in the 1700 block of 73rd Avenue before making a right turn toward Orral Street when he was struck by a 2006 Mercedes Benz, also traveling southbound on 73rd Avenue.
The man reportedly got thrown off his scooter and onto the roadway. He sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Mercedes driver, a woman, remained at the scene. She was detained for questioning after police suspected her of driving under the influence of alcohol. The suspected drunk driver was taken to a hospital after complaining of pain.
Police have yet to make any formal arrests. No additional information was readily available.
