[05-16-2025] Two Injured After Semi-Truck Fire Blocks Eastbound Lanes on I-8 Near OcotilloTwo people were injured after a semi-truck caught fire while descending Mt. Springs Grade on Interstate 8 in Imperial County on Friday afternoon, May 16, 2025.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. when the truck’s brakes overheated, sparking a fire that spread to the trailer. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames while traveling eastbound, just west of Ocotillo.

Debris from exploding tires injured the driver and another person. Imperial County Fire crews responded and were able to extinguish the fire, but both eastbound lanes were initially blocked by the burning semi.

Traffic was backed up to In-Ko-Pah until one lane was reopened. Emergency crews worked to unload the trailer’s cargo before towing the burned vehicle from the highway. Full lane access was restored around 8:15 p.m.

Caltrans reported that the fire caused roadway damage that will require future repairs. The incident remains under review.
