A University of California at Berkeley student was killed in a crash on Interstate 580 near San Quentin, Marin County, early Sunday morning, June 21, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 1:40 a.m. in the eastbound lanes.
A Nissan Versa carrying three occupants struck a center median wall after the driver reportedly fell asleep. The vehicle then veered off the roadway and crashed into a hillside near the San Quentin exit.
The passenger, identified as 35-year-old Paloma F. of Fullerton, was transported to a hospital where she later died from her injuries. The driver, a 32-year-old Oakland man, and a 7-year-old boy in the back seat were not injured.
CHP stated that impairment is not suspected. The investigation remains ongoing.
