At least one person was killed in a big rig crash that ignited a brush fire on Interstate 10 near Mecca, Riverside County, on Tuesday afternoon, July 22, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 12:25 p.m. on the eastbound side of I-10, east of the Cactus City rest stop.
Authorities said the tractor-trailer lost control and rolled off the freeway near an underpass. No other vehicles were involved.
CHP stated that the driver was able to exit the vehicle on his own before the fire spread from the engine to the rest of the big rig. Flames extended into nearby brush shortly after.
Riverside County Fire Department crews arrived within 20 minutes and contained a 10-by-10-foot vegetation fire. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours to complete mop-up operations.
At least one fatality was confirmed at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released, and it was unclear whether the driver was among the victims.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
