A cyclist was killed, and several people were injured after a pursuit that led to a reckless traffic collision in Camarillo on Saturday afternoon, July 27, 2024.
According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, the collision happened after 4:00 p.m. on Central Avenue between Beardsley Road and Santa Clara Avenue.
Authorities stated that a robbery of a firearm was reported at the Good Nite Inn on Ventura Boulevard. The suspect sped off in a sport utility vehicle, prompting a pursuit along Highway 101.
The responding officials chased the suspect vehicle to a gas station between Central Avenue and the Daily Drive frontage road. The assailant initially yielded but then took off again, striking a cyclist on Central Avenue. The victim, only described as a male bicyclist from Oxnard, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pursuit continued on eastbound Santa Clara Avenue, and the suspect got into another collision with a Tesla. At least three people were taken to the hospital, but their injuries remain unknown.
Officials arrested the suspect for causing bodily injuries. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol contributed to the collision.
No further information was released. The investigation continues.
