[08-01-2026] San Diego County, CA – One Killed in Rollover Crash on Northbound I-5 Near Old Town

One person was killed in a rollover crash on the northbound Interstate 5 near Old Town in San Diego early Saturday morning, August 1, 2026.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 2:20 a.m. on the northbound I-5 just south of the Interstate 8 interchange.

A gray SUV overturned onto its roof on the freeway lanes. While the incident was initially reported as a solo-vehicle crash, investigators later determined that at least two vehicles were involved.

Authorities said debris from the collision was scattered across both the northbound and southbound lanes, prompting temporary traffic stops in both directions. The crash also damaged approximately 20 to 30 feet of bridge railing and about 20 feet of concrete barrier wall, with debris falling onto Metropolitan Transit System trolley tracks below. The identity of the person killed has not been released.

The CHP continues to investigate the cause of the collision.
