One rider was killed and another seriously injured when a car struck two horses in the Anza area of Riverside County on Sunday night, August 31, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. on SR-371 near Contreras Road.
Officers found that two female riders had been ejected as a result of the collision. One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was transported to a nearby hospital with major injuries.
Investigators said a group of family and friends was riding eastbound on the shoulder of SR-371 when two of the horses veered into the highway lanes for unknown reasons. A westbound sedan struck the horses while traveling at what authorities described as a reasonable rate of speed.
The driver was not injured and cooperated with investigators. CHP confirmed that speed, alcohol, and drugs are not suspected to be factors. Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
