A driver was rescued after a chain-reaction crash sent a vehicle over an embankment along northbound Interstate 15 near the Lilac Bridge in San Diego County, late Monday night, January 19, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported around 11:20 p.m. on the northbound I-15 connector near Lilac Road.
CHP logs indicated the driver rear-ended another vehicle before striking a call box and several road signs, scattering debris across the roadway. The vehicle then traveled approximately 150 to 200 feet down an embankment and came to rest in a ravine.
The driver became trapped and was rescued by Cal Fire, Urban Search and Rescue, and North County Fire using a Stokes Basket and rope system. The extrication took about 25 minutes, and the driver was transported by NCFPD Medic 114 to Palomar Hospital under Code 3.
Medics were initially requested for the vehicle that was rear-ended, but were later declined after the other driver reportedly refused medical treatment.
The extent of the rescued driver’s injuries was not immediately known.
CHP officers coordinated recovery efforts, including requesting a tow truck to remove the vehicle from the ravine. No lane closures were reported.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
