A flatbed truck hauling containers for non-liquefied hydrogen collided with a sedan on the westbound Ortega (74) Highway near Lake Elsinore on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 12:10 p.m. near Vista Point, about a mile west of Lake Elsinore. The truck and a Toyota Camry collided for reasons under investigation, causing the truck’s cargo to scatter across the highway.
Both drivers pulled to the shoulder following the crash, and Riverside County Fire Department crews responded within minutes. Firefighters found at least 10 containers, resembling oxygen tanks, strewn across both lanes. Officials confirmed the containers were used for gaseous hydrogen but were empty and had not ruptured.
As a precaution, both sides of the highway were shut down while a hazardous materials unit cleared the containers from the roadway.
A SigAlert was issued at 12:20 p.m., affecting traffic from San Juan Capistrano to Lake Elsinore. Cleanup was expected to conclude by 1:45 p.m.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
What A Lawyer Can Do For You

The best part is that they will do all of these things for you at no upfront cost. So if you’re injured in an accident, hire a personal injury attorney to recover medical bills, car repair costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
