Two drivers sustained major injuries in a head-on crash involving a box truck and a semi-truck hauling approximately 80,000 pounds of livestock feed on State Route 165 in Merced County on Tuesday afternoon, July 7, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 2:02 p.m. south of Westside Boulevard.
Authorities said a 55-year-old man from Turlock was driving a 2016 Freightliner box truck northbound on SR-165, while a 44-year-old man from Winton was driving a 2017 Peterbilt semi-truck southbound, hauling livestock feed. Both vehicles were traveling approximately 55 mph.
Preliminary investigations indicate the Freightliner crossed into the southbound lane, colliding head-on with the semi-truck. Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lane south of Westside Boulevard.
Fire personnel extricated both drivers, who were then airlifted to trauma centers in Modesto. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors.
The CHP continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
