A 53-year-old woman suffered major injuries, and a 3-year-old girl sustained minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Planada, Merced County, on Tuesday morning, October 20, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded at around 8:22 a.m. to Highway 140 and Plainsburg Road.
A preliminary investigation found that a 61-year-old Merced woman was driving a 2018 Nissan sedan eastbound on Highway 140. CHP said she stopped at a stop sign before proceeding into the intersection.
For reasons still under investigation, the woman and child crossed the highway into the vehicle’s path, according to CHP. The front of the Nissan struck the pedestrian.
The woman was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries. The girl was taken to Mercy Hospital in Merced as a precaution.
CHP said the driver cooperated at the scene, and drugs and alcohol did not appear to be contributing factors.
The incident remains under investigation.
