[05-18-2024] Driver Killed, Another Injured Following Multi-Vehicle Collision Involving Wrong Way Driver on I-8A driver was killed, and another was injured following a multi-vehicle collision involving a wrong-way driver in San Diego County on Saturday night, May 18, 2024. 

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 11:40 p.m. along I-8 near the Fletcher Parkway. 

Authorities stated that the driver of a Toyota Tundra, identified as a 24-year-old National City man, was traveling westbound in the wrong direction on I-8. The vehicle then struck a Honda Civic head-on about two miles west of Fletcher Parkway. The 33-year-old driver of the Honda sustained major injuries and was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital. 

Police said that the suspect attempted to flee the scene following the crash. As he traveled across the westbound lanes, he was fatally struck by a black Ford F-150 truck. The occupants of the Ford were not injured. 

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the collision. DUI was not a factor for the other two drivers involved. 

Further information has yet to be released by the authorities. No additional details were available at this time.
