A 14-year-old boy is recovering from serious injuries after a collision with a garbage truck while riding his bike to school in La Mesa on Thursday morning, September 5, 2024.
The accident occurred just before 8:00 a.m. at the intersection of University Avenue and La Mesa Boulevard.
The victim, Caleb C., a freshman at Helix Charter High School, was on his way to school when the incident happened. The boy suffered multiple pelvic injuries and is currently recovering at the hospital. His father, David C., reported that his pelvis is broken in the front and back and is out of alignment.
The driver of the garbage truck remained at the scene, and witnesses reported seeing the mangled bike and emergency responders arriving quickly. According to La Mesa police, drugs and alcohol are not believed to have played a role in the accident.
