[01-08-2025] Hurst Fire Forces Evacuation of Over 3,000 Residents in SylmarThe Hurst Fire in Sylmar, Los Angeles, rapidly expanded to 500 acres, forcing the evacuation of more than 3,000 residents on Wednesday morning, January 8, 2025.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire was first reported at approximately 10:10 p.m. on Tuesday in the 15900 block of W. Yarnell Street, behind the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. 

Witnesses, including California Highway Patrol officers, reported seeing an entire mountainside engulfed in flames.

LAFD Fire Chief Kristin Crowley noted that the Hurst Fire is burning within the footprint of the 2019 Saddle Ridge Fire, which scorched nearly 9,000 acres.

Early Wednesday morning, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that federal assistance had been secured through the Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The cause of the fire remains under investigation as firefighting efforts continue.
